What It Means to Be a B Corp

No, It’s Not a Secret Society, But It’s Pretty Cool

You’ve probably seen Certified B Corp™ on brands you love—Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, Allbirds, and ZaaS 😉. But what does it actually mean? And why should you care?

A B Corp is a Business That Puts Purpose First

Unlike traditional companies that focus on maximizing profits at all costs, B Corps operate differently. We commit to balancing purpose and profit, meeting high standards for:

Social impact – Treating people (employees, vendors, and customers) like humans, not transactions. At ZaaS, for every class we teach, we donate a meal to a child in need through our Teach One, Feed One program. As the founder, I meet every single employee, contractor, and client 1:1 to humanize their experience with us at ZaaS.

Environmental sustainability – Making business decisions that reduce harm and promote a healthier planet. Typical yoga classes require mats and yoga clothes. Unfortunately, most yoga mats are made with PVC material. Most yoga clothing brands have fallen into the fast-fashion industry, polluting our waters and the world. At ZaaS, we offer a Desk Yoga series that doesn’t require mats or a change of clothes. Our sessions can be done virtually to reduce our carbon footprint.

Accountability and transparency—We hold ourselves to rigorous third-party audits that prove we’re walking the talk. I submit my payroll to show employees are paid a family wage. A carbon footprint spreadsheet tracked our company’s gas mileage and airline travel. Employees work flexible schedules and haveautonomy to balance their family and work lives. Having a third party ask for this information helped ZaaS put processes in place and streamline our efforts.

How Does This Play Out at ZaaS?

  1. We work with diverse, fairly paid wellness professionals and ensure that corporate wellness isn’t just a luxury for the privileged few.
  2. We offer wellness experiences that make an impact, not just check the “self-care” box or capitalize on employee burnout.
  3. We believe in creating long-term well-being, not just temporary feel-good moments. Our executive leadership strategy helps ensure that well-being is part of the company values and not just a task on employees’ to-do lists.

Being a B Corp means being part of a movement redefining business success. And for us? Success isn’t just about revenue. It’s about how many people we help feel healthier, calmer, and more balanced.
